  1. One thing I really like about LotK is how plausible everyone feels.

    Serafina, for example, is highly skilled without being invulnerable. She has limitations both stated and shown, for which she suffers measurable narrative consequences. Even with her exceptional skill and dedication, she still struggles for her victories and sometimes falls short.

    Aethelburg is also cool, for different reasons. She clearly works just as hard as Serafina for her skill and success, but is much better at showmanship. But beneath it all, she seems to be a genuinely good person, so it’s no surprise that Serafina finds her infuriating. She oddly seems to have a lot in common with George, in that they’re both amazingly upbeat while seeking out situations where they literally get beat down.

    I also appreciate the generally low stakes; the driving conflict of the entire story is essentially a friendly rivalry between two of the characters. Real characters finding meaning in the mundane; great story.
